At least 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
